Changes in Medicaid & Marketplace for 2027
As a result of the federal law commonly known as the One Big Beautiful Bill, passed in 2025, certain individuals who do not fall into one of the following categories may lose access to Medicaid and ACA Marketplace insurance beginning October 1, 2026, and December 31, 2026, respectively:
U.S. citizens
Lawful permanent residents who have held that status for at least five years
Cuban or Haitian entrants
Individuals covered under the Compact of Free Association
The law also introduces work or community engagement requirements for certain Medicaid recipients, along with more frequent eligibility reviews for adults enrolled in Medicaid expansion programs. These changes may create additional barriers to obtaining and maintaining health coverage, although exemptions apply. Individuals currently enrolled in Medicaid should ensure their address is updated on their profile to carefully review notices from their state Medicaid agency and seek assistance to understand how these changes may affect their eligibility and coverage.
